Braille Awareness Workshops
Have you ever wondered…
- Where braille came from?
- What does braille look like?
- Why is braille important?
- How are braille books produced?
- How is reading braille different from reading a print book?
During our interactive Braille Awareness workshops, these and many more common questions are addressed.
Participants learn how to spell their name in braille, read from a twin vision book (a dual printed and braille book), see a variety of braille resources, such as card games and tactile globes, and experience some of the challenges vision-impaired individuals experience each day.
Our Braille Awareness Presentations are designed to promote awareness and understanding of braille in our communities and promote inclusion. These sessions are frequently delivered in early childhood centres, schools, libraries, community centres, and for organisations.

Braille and Moon for Touch Readers Course

Braille House offers instruction in both for blind or have low vision individuals who need to learn to touch read. We offer courses in three different modes: face-to-face at Braille House, remotely at one of our SE Queensland outreach centres, and distance via Zoom.
The Functional Course is designed for individuals interested in learning braille basics to read signs in the community (i.e. lift buttons and wall plaques), while the Full Course is intended for those wanting to read books from our library.
Are you blind or low vision and interested in reading braille or Moon by touch? If so, please complete call 07 3848 5257 or complete the Touch Readers Course expression of interest form.

Braille Literacy Challenge
Braille House partners with school and educational providers to develop extracurricular opportunities and learning resources for young braille learners.
Each year, blind and low vision Queensland school students are invited to participate in our annual Braille Literacy Challenge. This is a reading and writing challenge where braille students come together to challenge each other in a fun and friendly way. It is a great opportunity for students to network with one another and meet other children experiencing blindness or vision loss. Teachers from various schools also benefit from meeting and sharing ideas.
This popular event represents more than a celebration of braille literacy skills; it’s also a testament to the power of inclusion and the benefits braille education impart upon our children.
If you are a braille reading student, or a parent or teacher of a braille student and would like to learn about the next Braille Literacy Challenge, please phone our office on 07 3848 5257 or complete the BLC EOI form.
