“The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
At Braille House, we strive to open the world of literacy to all by transcribing print books into braille for blind and low vision readers.

Why?

For every 100 books a sighted child has access to, a blind child has only five.
Braille reading materials enable vision impaired children and adults to develop their literacy skills, leading to better employment opportunities, independence and social inclusion.

How You Can Make a Difference

There are many ways you can support Braille House and

bring the joy of reading to those who need it most.

Workplace Giving

Workplace giving is a simple and tax-effective way to support Braille House. Also known as payroll

giving, this allows staff to donate part of their pre-tax salary. Some companies match employees’

donations, doubling their impact. There are three ways you can set up workplace giving:

Sponsorship

We value our partners and aim to identify projects that support your objectives.

Each year, we host several impactful events and community engagement events, such as our Braille Literacy Challenge which depend on sponsorship.

These events provide vision impaired school students to learn and engage with others in the blind and low vision community. Alternatively, if you are interested in launching a new project that supports our work at Braille House, we are happy to discuss options. Whether you’re a small business or a large corporation, your support will help us reach more people in need.

Gift in Will

Leaving a gift in your will create a long-lasting impact on blind and low vision individuals across Australia. Your gift supports the development of vital resources and programs that empower people through tough literacy. Braille House has served seven generations of vision impaired Australians. Join us in sustaining future generations for years to come.

Volunteer

We have an army of volunteers dedicated to bringing the world to the fingertips of blind and low vision individuals. Many of our volunteers are university students, retired professionals, parents and members of the vision impaired community.

Our volunteer roles include:

Microsoft Word Transcribers

Transcribers convert books into MS Word format, ensuring accuracy and adherence to specific formatting guidelines. This role requires attention to detail and a long-term commitment, as projects can take between a month and a year to complete. We're looking for dedicated volunteers who can see each project through to the end.

Duxbury Formatter

Duxbury Formatters transcribe documents into braille at a grade 2 level using Duxbury software and following a strict set of formatting guidelines. We ask that volunteers commit to completing projects in full. Formatters must have an in-depth knowledge of grade 2 braille.

Proofreaders

Proofreaders review and verify the work of our Formatters, ensuring high accuracy in grade 2 braille transcription. This role requires strong attention to detail, commitment to seeing each project through to completion, and proficiency in grade 2 braille. The position is ideally suited for remote work, allowing you to focus in a quiet environment.

Book Binders

Do you love books and want to help bring them to life? Once our braille pages are embossed, they need to be assembled into volumes, and that’s where you come in! No prior experience is required — we’ll provide all the necessary training to get you started easily.

Library Assistants

Library Assistants support our Librarian with shelving and preparing books for postal delivery to our blind and low vision readers across Australia. No prior experience is required — just a passion for literacy and helping others.

Workshop Facilitators

Are you passionate about engaging audiences and promoting braille literacy? Join our team as a Workshop Facilitator, delivering Braille Awareness presentations to enthusiastic groups. Flexibility and a love for spreading the word about braille are key. Training is provided.  Interested in becoming a volunteer? Click here to submit your expression of interest. REAL STORIES

Meet Riley

“I wish I had found Braille House years ago,” says Riley, a Year 11 student from Cairns. He discovered Braille House a year ago while searching for braille books online. “Braille books can cost around $1,000, so my reading was limited. It was very frustrating.”

Now, Riley proudly reads two books every weekend, enjoying historical and crime novels.
He also appreciates receiving the In-Touch magazine, which lists available titles. “I was eager to read The Cane [by Maryrose Cuskelly] but had to wait for it. The staff in the library [at Braille House] were great — they sent it to me as soon as it was returned,” he shares.

Riley loves the personalised recommendations from the Braille House staff, such as Short, Back and Science by Dr. Karl Krusztnicki, which he found fascinating. “Did you know coconut water is as thick as blood? The librarian’s recommendations have been spot-on!”

Having started reading braille in preschool, Riley uses it for his schoolwork. He’s learning to use a compass in sports, relying on his phone for spoken directions, and enjoys playing board games like backgammon and Yahtzee. “I win a lot, which is fun!”

He’s looking forward to being able to borrow board games from Braille House in the coming months.
